'm here seriously trying to resolve it, and i would hope the white house would get serious, as well. >> welcome to the journal editorial report. i'm paul. not exactly a meeting of the minds this week between president obama and house speaker john boehner on just where talks to end the fiscal showdown stand. the president, for his part, took his case to the public and repeated his call for a tax hike on upper income americans but made little mention of cuts to entitlement spending. something the speaker said must be part of any final deal. joining the panel this week, wall street journal columnist and deputy editor dan, and ms. o'grady and washington columnist kim stossel. you are stuck in washington having to talk to all the sources. and you have been working them this week, i know. is the mood as sour as it sounds? >> it is by the end of this week and here's why. republicans came out right after the election and said to the president, you want revenue, here. you want revenue on the wealthy? we will give it to you. let's do this via limbing tax deductions for the wealthy. the presid

for the affluent may be unavoileable. obama did spend the last two years proselytizing for such a hike and voters were well aware of it when they re-elected him. but the white house has said that the rates don't have to return to clinton era levels. obama's nemesis as he often told us are millionaires and billionaires. so why not urge that the higher tax rates be applied only to those with incomes of $1 million and not the couples earning more than $250,000. now, i'm talking pure politics, not equity in this case. can they hang their hat on the fact, okay, you're against millionaires, we'll take back their cut for the millionaires? below that they have to get the deal. >> the problem with this is chuck schumer and other senate democrats tried to offer this to republicans last time. remember the last time we did this they rejected it. >> it works for them now. they can say all we want is the schumer deal. >> right now they don't have the leverage to get the schumer deal. they rejected the schumer deal. they don't have the leverage to get it. >> here we disagree. i think they may have a case. if th

so much. and good luck with it. i hope it sells. >> cheers. >>> all right. president obama is speaking out about the fiscal cliff in his first television interview since the election. he spoke with bloomberg's white house correspondent yesterday and the white house just aired on bloomberg television minutes ago. here's some of what the president had to say about the republican proposal to close tax loopholes without raising taxes on the country's top 2%. >> it's not me being stubborn. it's not me being partisan. it's a matter of math. you know, there's a lot of talk that somehow we can raise $800 billion or a trillion worth of revenue by closing loop hopes and destructions. but a lot of your viewers understand that the only way to do that if you completely eliminated, for example, charitable deductions. well, if you eliminate charitable deductions that means every hospital and university and nonfor profit agency across the country would suddenly find themselves on the verge of collapse. so that's not a realistic option. >> that aired a few minutes ago. we'll have a lot more

[ applause ] >> and joining me now from the white house, nbc news correspondent viqueira. vic, will the gop continue its pile-on of the ambassador? will it have the opposite effect of hardening the president and daring him essentially to select her for secretary of state perhaps? >> well, you know, it's hard to say exactly what is going through the president's mind at this point. a lot of people think that he is really under the gun to make an appointment, but hillary clinton is still the secretary of state. he may have some time yet. perhaps even as much as a month or up to the inauguration on january 20th. so there is that. second of all, susan rice made that pilgrimage, if you will, up to the senate after all the criticism that she got from john mccain and lindsey graham and other key republican senators after her appearance on the sunday shows talking about the incident in benghazi. they were so angry because they say she disseminated false informatio

be yours. ♪ >>> we are back. the white house's website was created to provide an online platform for citizens to petition the obama administration to take action on issues that they find very important to themselves. the the site makes civic engagement easy and has sparked some interesting causes. and its policy of issuing a response if a petition gathering 25,000 signatures in 30 days has caught the attention of the internet trolls. it was the forum used by over 100,000 texans to secede from the united states, which resulted in another petition to withdraw. anything can happen. you can see where this is going. but there's one petition on the site that we here at "the ed show" can certainly get behind. it's a substantial stimulus project that would create millions of jobs, boost america's steel industry, got to love that, expand our space program, and basically guarantee our national security. what could be better? someone has petitioned the administration to build a death star. the fictional moon-size space base capable of destroying entire planets from "star wars." just under 2
